Motos: the Dominican Republic’s preferred Transportation:
As I mentioned on the photo page open to everyone, motos are a very important mode of transportation for the Dominican Republic. You also know from my book that motos are everywhere and are often a major pain for drivers, because they do not follow any of the normal rules of the road.

I also mentioned that ownership of a moto is pretty much a license to open any type of business. Some may think this is a bit of an exaggeration, but my pictures here will show you I just call it like it is. Ownership of a moto allows an individual to open a taxi company, a delivery company, a construction company, and just about any other type of business that requires transportation.

I love seeing all of the ingenious ways Dominican drivers use motos to haul stuff around the country!!!

Check out these pictures!

If you order a birthday cake and ask to have it delivered... This is likely how it will be transported to your house.

I am amazed at the skill of the Dominican Moto Drivers. Balance a cake in one hand, while navigating the horrendous traffic with the other. All the while sporting a confident smile! Sweet!

This guy is happily driving to work. He is a carpenter. If you look closely, you will notice the sander on the side of the box. What a great life!

This photo shows how you get gas delivered to your house. Keep in mind almost every Dominican house uses bottled gas. There is no such thing as getting gas from a gas line.

This guy is carrying a large gas can from a home to the station to get it filled. What amazes me the most is how Dominicans are able to carry the cans without dropping them.

They do not even bother tying the canister down!

You have probably already seen the pictures of the guy with what seems to be 1000 loaves of bread. Here is another one! It never ceases to amaze me how much stuff these motos can carry.

Case of beer to be delivered. This guy is carrying a case of beer on the back of his trusty moto. The amazing thing is the box is not tied down.

He simply uses his arm to kind of brace the box. No problem!

I get a kick out of watching Dominicans carry gas cans. In this picture a father and his son are taking their gas can to the station to get it filled. The poor kid is just about ready to fall off the back of the moto.

The kid is there to hold the moto on. No need to tie the thing on the bike. Just have your kid hold it on!

I waited a long time to see if I could get a picture of this guy carrying his ladder on his moto. I have no doubt he carried it here on the moto parked in front of the fence. I just wish I could have seen him do it!

I'll just have to keep my eyes open and try to keep my camera handy...

Chicken delivery service. These chickens are alive and this guy is driving from house to house to sell them. It is crazy for me to think they are just tied onto the moto!

If you look closely at the back of the moto there is also a cage back there that is full of more chickens. I guess the ones tied by their feed are the first to go. If the buyer wants one that will live for a while then they must get one out of the back.

I thought I had seen just about everything... but I was wrong...

I guess I am not too surprised to see this guy carrying a 50 gallon drum on a moto. The really amazing part is they are cruising down a really busy highway.

A dad, his son, and two live goats! What struck me about this situation was that the goat on the left was trying to lick the ground or the back tire. It had a really hard time because it must have been disoriented.

The picture was way too tempting and when the dad realized we were taking pictures he started cheering! What a great pic.

They were proud to be cruising down the highway with their goats.

Two 2x4x20s. I cant believe this picture! It caught me so off guard I was not even able to get the picture with the entire board inside the frame.

You get the idea!. The boards were way to long for me to get a good shot. I am amazed that this guy could drive his moto down the street while balancing the boards over his shoulder.

This is the way to move your bed. One moto for the frame and another for the mattress.

Right through the middle of town. No problem! I got so excited to take this picture I almost wrecked our car! My wife was freaked out because I pulled off the side of the road so they could pass us.

The problem was they were going so fast I could not chase them down to get more pictures. I ended up losing them after a block. Bummer! It would have been great to have a whole series of these pictures.

It is a little hard to see in this picture but this guy is selling fish. They are fresh and he is simply driving around with the fish hanging on the board on the back of his moto.

Two kids are returning from picking bananas. They are traveling down the road at about 40 and the one on the back is standing on top of the bananas. I hear there are a lot of fatalities from motos each year in the Dominican Republic.

After seeing a picture like this it kind of makes sense. I cant believe the kid on the back is just sitting/standing on the bananas!

I dont know what this guy is carrying but he really knows how to load a moto. It was interesting to see him drive because he was partially sitting on one of the bags.

The top bag looks like it was tied on with a piece of string. I believe this is the only one of the moto pics where the driver actually has his load tied down!
